An Analysis of the Role of the Enslaved Population on Ten Tharp Properties in 1805 Trelawny, Jamaica
Following on from Ke Vaughn Harding’s talk on the recreation of a slave dwelling at Good Hope owned by planter John Tharp, we are fortunate that our good friend, Dr Ivor Conolley, will present to us a profile of the enslaved population on John Tharp’s properties in general.
Dr Conolley will investigate Tharp’s inventory of 1805. The data includes a list of his enslaved population numbering close to three thousand across ten properties from which he generated enormous wealth. The presentation will look at characteristics of his workforce – their age, health, occupation and country of origin –and how these impacted operations of the estates.
Ivor Conolley, archaeologist, cultural resources manager and building preservationist, has a PhD in History and an MA in Heritage Studies. He has lectured in archaeology at the University of the West Indies, led several archaeological excavations and archaeology field schools and has overseen the restoration of numerous historic buildings. He has been published on subjects in history and archaeology; his central research interest is pre-Columbian archaeology. He is a member of the Archaeological Society of Jamaica, the Jamaican Historical Society and of the Georgian Society of Jamaica and has served each of these organizations as president. He is presently a director of the non-profit organization, The Genesis Project and director of Conolley Services, a one-stop shop for archaeology, building preservation and cultural resources management.
